Aging is defined as the biological process of growing old or maturing. Others define it as the impact of time on our bodies. It is a process that is inevitable for all living organisms but as humans, we can at least try to slow down the process using both natural and artificial means. Listed below are some of the things that may delay aging.
Exercise Make a habit of exercising often as this is one of the ways to stay young. Exercising on a regular retains youthful energy and youthful cardiovascular systems. Go on the treadmill, walk or jog, ride your bike, swim and play any sport that keeps you on your feet.
Drink a lot of water Adequate water in your system will flush out toxins from your body, leaving you energetic and rejuvenated. It will also make your skin glow, making you look younger. Make sure you have a minimum of at least six glasses everyday and not more than three litres.
Get enough sleep Getting undisturbed, quality sleep every night allows the body to rest and repair itself. Good sleep improves concentration, sharpens reflexes, regulates hormones and reduces stress. Experts recommend at least 8 hours of sleep everyday.
Eat healthy By following a healthy diet, one does not run the risk of un-balancing the hormones. Since hormonal imbalance has a tremendous role in ageing, healthy eating programs are recommended so that the body can maintain its normal levels of hormones. I suggest you cook more often at home, rather than buying fast food. Cooking at home enables you to know every ingredient that is going in your meal. You must also load up on fruit and vegetables. After all, you’re what you eat.
Stay away from the sun The sun’s rays have been shown to damage DNA and accelerate aging in cells. In fact, studies have shown that the sun is one of the leading causes of aging. If you must really be in the sun, wear a sun cream and moisturizer to keep your skin supple.
Avoid stress Stress is known to accelerate the aging process. When we suffer stress, we lose our bodies’ natural balance which causes damage to hormone secretion, cell repair, and collagen production (collagen is responsible for your skin’s elasticity and strength). Listening to good music or watching a nice, wholesome television show will help in lowering down stress levels in your body.
All in all, slowing down the aging process is not difficult at all, provided you’re willing to work on it. I encourage you to have power over things that you can actually control.
